How to make money from Facebook Reels: Content Monetization (October 2026)
Shortsmith team · Updated

Facebook pays creators for Reels through Facebook Content Monetization. The program started as a beta on October 2, 2024 and merged In-stream ads, Ads on Reels and the Performance bonus into one program that pays for Reels, longer videos, Stories, photos and text posts based on performance. It is still invite-only: you express interest from the Monetization tab in your Professional Dashboard and wait for an invitation.
On March 18, 2026, Meta said Facebook paid creators nearly $3 billion in 2025, with 60% of that going to Reels. The same day it announced Creator Fast Track for creators who already have audiences on other platforms. We checked Facebook's creator blog, the Meta Newsroom and the Content Monetization Policies in the Meta Business Help Center on October 12, 2026 to write this guide.

Key point
There is no published follower count that unlocks the program automatically. Express interest, then keep posting original Reels so your account shows strong performance when invitations go out.
How are earnings calculated? Qualified views and earnings rate
Content Monetization pays based on the engagement, views and plays your eligible public content receives. From March 2026 Meta said it would put more emphasis on rewarding original creators for deeper engagement, longer watch time and qualified views, and it added three metrics to explain earnings.
A qualified view is a view that may be eligible to earn money. The earnings rate is your approximate earnings per 1,000 qualified views. Non-qualified views is a breakdown of why some views do not earn. Because the rate varies by country and post, the earnings rate in your own Insights tab is more useful than any per-1,000 figure quoted online. Earnings insights are combined in one Insights tab in the Professional Dashboard and Meta Business Suite.
- Qualified view: a view that may be eligible to earn
- Earnings rate: approximate earnings per 1,000 qualified views
- Non-qualified views: which views did not earn, and why
Reels that cannot be monetized: banned formats and behaviors
Facebook's Content Monetization Policies list formats that cannot be monetized at all: static videos, static image polls, slideshows of images, looping videos, text montages and embedded ads. Engagement bait and soliciting engagement, such as asking for likes to unlock part two, cannot monetize either.
Some subjects face reduced or restricted monetization: debated social issues, tragedy or conflict, objectionable activity, sexual or suggestive activity, strong language and explicit content. Misinformation and misleading medical information are ineligible. With Meta saying in 2026 that it will reward original creators more, reposting other people's videos almost unchanged is likely to keep losing ground.
- Banned formats: static videos, static image polls, image slideshows, looping videos, text montages, embedded ads
- Banned behaviors: engagement bait and soliciting engagement
- Restricted subjects: social issues, tragedy, objectionable activity, sexual content, strong language, explicit content
Already have followers elsewhere? Creator Fast Track
Meta announced Creator Fast Track on March 18, 2026. It is for established creators on Instagram, TikTok or YouTube who are new to Facebook or returning to it. Creators in the program get increased reach on eligible reels and three months of guaranteed pay for sharing eligible reels on Facebook.
Pay depends on your following on another platform: $1,000 a month with at least 100,000 followers on Instagram, TikTok or YouTube, or $3,000 a month with more than one million followers on at least one of them. Fast Track creators also get immediate access to Content Monetization, so they can keep earning after the three months end. Check Meta's application page for the full eligibility requirements, terms and supported countries.
Posting Shortsmith videos as Facebook Reels
Shortsmith reads one long video, suggests three story angles and builds a 1080×1920 vertical video from the angle you choose. A question-style title sits at the top, the source footage in the middle and captions below, and the scenes keep changing, so the result does not fall into Facebook's banned static, slideshow or looping formats. The recording below shows three finished Shortsmith videos playing side by side.
Shortsmith does not post to Facebook directly, so download the finished file and upload it as a reel in the Facebook app or Meta Business Suite. It is an original file with no other app's logo. If you used someone else's footage, make sure it is licensed for reuse and credit the creator in your caption. If you used AI narration, disclose AI use in line with Meta's "AI info" labeling approach.
Where to look when earnings drop
If earnings fall suddenly, start with the non-qualified views breakdown in the Insights tab. Meta added it in March 2026 to show which views did not earn and why. Knowing whether a reel was held back by its format (a static or looping video), a behavior (engagement bait) or its subject (a restricted category) tells you what to change in the next one.
If monetization stops for a whole Page or profile, follow the Meta Business Help Center guidance on checking monetization eligibility, and submit an appeal if you think the decision is wrong. Posts in banned formats can weigh on the whole account, so keep image slideshows and looping videos off any account you want to monetize.
FAQ
How many followers do I need to monetize on Facebook?
Content Monetization is invite-only, so there is no published follower threshold. Express interest in Professional Dashboard, Monetization, Content Monetization, and wait for an invitation.
Can photos and text posts earn money too?
Yes. Content Monetization pays for Reels, longer videos, Stories, photos and text posts based on performance. According to Meta, 60% of 2025 creator payouts went to Reels.
Can I post the same video I posted as an Instagram reel?
If you made it, yes. Upload the original file rather than one with another app's logo, and make sure it does not fall into Facebook's banned formats such as static videos, slideshows or looping videos.
Can Shortsmith post to Facebook directly?
Not yet. Shortsmith posts directly to YouTube and Instagram. For Facebook, download the finished file and upload it as a reel in the Facebook app or Meta Business Suite.
